Free artists carnival workshops
Artists opportunity from Illuminati Creative Arts in conjunction with Colchester Carnival 2011, Slack Space, and Firstsite.

Artists who live or work in the Essex and Suffolk area are invited to apply to take part in a 3 day Carnival Arts training course, There are spaces for 12 people. The course, normally costing £300, is fully funded and is completely free ..

The training takes place at Slack Space in Colchester in from Sunday 15th May to Tuesday 17th May inclusive, and is led by professional trainers from Rampage Mas Band from Luton – the home of British carnival. The work covers design and construction of carnival costume and props. It will be very intensive but extremely rewarding, leading to an optional opportunity to create and show something special for Colchester Carnival, which takes place on July 16th 2011, The Colchester Free Festival on August 27th and potentially for the “Sparks Will Fly” , the Essex Big Event in 2012.

The course includes basic materials and notes. You will be expected to attend each day from 10.00 - 17.00 with a break. There may be opportunities for you to work on independently until later. Tea and coffee will be provided, but artists will be responsible for their own meals.

Although the training is free, the quid pro quo is that the artists will have to commit to at least three evenings, or one complete day on a weekend in the weeks leading up to the Colchester carnival, working in one of the local community centres with the local carnival groups cascading your knowledge and helping them design and make carnival costumes and paradable objects.

To apply, email CV and up to six images of previous work ( which need not be carnival-based but which shows style and imagination) to colchesterslackers@gmail.com marking the subject line “Carnival Training” with a short piece, no more than 100 words about why you would like this training. Applicants must be sure that they will be available on these dates.

Applications must be received by April 22nd. The successful artists will be informed by April 27th.

Slack Space vintage art poster auction 16 April 2011

Dear friends,

I am very excited to tell you that Slack Space has received a very special donation this Spring. We are now the proud owners of a large and comprehensive collection of vintage art posters.

Some of these have to be seen to be believed. The collection includes vintage posters from our very own The Minories dating back over 40 years, as well as early posters from Colchester Arts Centre, the University Gallery and other venues.

In addition to this feast of local treasure the collection features a large number of original posters from Royal Academy exhibitions dating over thirty years and including such powerful and momentous exhibitions as Sensations, Monet and The Art of Photography.

This work is to be auctioned with the proceeds going to support Slack Space’s work in the community and with local artists and musicians.

The Slack Space art poster auction will take place throughout the day on Saturday 16 April. The posters will be on display in a special hanging in the Slack Space exhibition space on Queen St, Colchester throughout the day so do pop in anytime between 11am – 11pm to have a look at these marvellous vintage items.

Due to size the auction of posters will be split into three parts

3pm Part One: Of local interest

6pm Part Two: Film, music and miscellaneous

9pm Part Three: The Royal Academy

Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

To view the posters in advance of the auction please go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/colchesterslackers  where they are available to view in three separate albums.
